Besides the actual text content on the page, there are several on page elements that you need to optimize as well.

Most importantly, you’ll need to optimize the title tag – this is the “title” element in the head of the page. It populates the text up in the tab at the top of the browser window when you’re on that page, and it also usually populates the text on your blue link when you show up as a search result. (but many times Google will tweak what shows up)

The title tag is typically the most weighted on page element, so it’s important that you optimize it correctly. Skip the old school tactic of keyword phrase bar keyword phrase 2 bar keyword phrase 3. Remember, this is going to be your blue in the SERP – you need to write something interesting, that will entice people to click through to your site.

The next important element is the page heading. There are multiple heading tags, but typically, your H1 tag contains the main heading for the page, and you’ll use h2s or h3s for other subheadings. Again, skip the single exact keyword, and write something conversational that describes what the page is about. Make sure that the main keyword phrase for the intent-target of the page is present in both the title tag and your H1 heading.

Clearly, you need your keyword phrase and variants in your actual page copy.

One element that’s often overlooked is image optimization. Before uploading your images, it’s beneficial to change the file names to include your target keywords. Don’t forget your alt text – every embedded image should have optimized alt text that includes your targeted keywords.

Make sure you’re optimizing the image files as well. You should always load your images at the size they’ll be displayed, and make sure you’ve compressed the images before upload. Basically, you want to minimize the file size – the larger the file, the longer it will take to download.

We talked about URLs back in section three – whenever you’ve got the ability to customize the URL for a page, you should include your targeted keyword phrase. Remember to use hyphens to separate your words.

It’s important to include your targeted phrase in the meta description for the page – the meta description doesn’t carry any weight in the algorithm, but it populates the grey description under your blue link in Google. Think of it like AdWords copy – you want to write something that will entice users to click through to your page, and including your targeted keywords will make a huge difference.
